  14. PITTSBURGH PIRATES -- Manager: Jim Leyland (593-541), entering
  15. eighth season with the Pirates.  1992 Finish: 96-66 (1st). 
  16.  
  17. STRENGTHS -- The best manager in baseball in Leyland, who seeks
  18. a fourth straight N.L. East title; shortstop Jay Bell and center
  19. fielder Andy Van Slyke are the only stars left on the roster;
  20. Number three starter Randy Tomlin won 14 games last season. 
  21.  
  22. WEAKNESSES -- The starting pitching is hurting with the loss of
  23. Doug Drabek. The projected ace of the staff, Zane Smith, still
  24. has elbow trouble; loss of Jose Lind at second base and Barry
  25. Bonds in the outfield leaves the team inexperienced at many
  26. positions.

  28. NEW FACES -- Signed pitcher John Candelaria (Los Angeles), and
  29. outfielder Lonnie Smith (Atlanta).

  33. MONTREAL EXPOS -- Manager: Felipe Alou (70-55), entering first
  34. full season with the Expos.  1992 Finish: 87-75 (2nd).

  36. STRENGTHS -- One of best young outfields in the major leagues in
  37. Moises Alou, center fielder Marquis Grissom and emerging
  38. superstar Larry Walker;  Alou is popular with his young team;
  39. second baseman DeLino Deshields hit .292.

  41. WEAKNESSES -- Inexperience in the infield where Sean Berry and
  42. Frank Bolick try to replace Tim Wallach at third and Wil Cordero
  43. takes over for Spike Owen at shortstop; Lee Stevens, Archi
  44. Cionfrocco and Greg Colbrunn are competing at first base; Closer
  45. John Wetteland begins the season with a broken bone in his foot.

  47. NEW FACES -- Acquired Bolick (Seattle),  pitcher Mike Gardiner
  48. (Boston) and catcher Tim Spehr (Kansas City).

  52. ST. LOUIS CARDINALS -- Manager: Joe Torre (734-830), entering
  53. fourth season with the Cardinals.  1992 Finish: 83-79 (3rd).

  55. STRENGTHS -- The team is strong defensively up the middle with
  56. Tom Pagnozzi at catcher, Ozzie Smith at shortstop and Ray
  57. Lankford in center field; pitchers Rheal Cormier and Donovan
  58. Osborne have potential and Lee Smith had 43 saves last season;
  59. Bob Tewksbury overachieved with a 16-5 record and a 2.16 earned
  60. run average.

  62. WEAKNESSES -- The Cards were last in the league in homers last
  63. season and sent power-hitting outfielder Felix Jose to Kansas
  64. City for Gregg Jefferies. Lankford hit .293 but he and his
  65. teammates must cut down on strikeouts.

  67. NEW FACES -- Signed catcher Hector Villanueva (St. Louis),
  68. pitcher Rob Murphy (Houston) and acquired Jefferies (Kansas
  69. City).

  73. CHICAGO CUBS -- Manager: Jim Lefebvre (311-337), entering second
  74. season with the Cubs.  1992 Finish: 78-84 (4th). 
  75.  
  76. STRENGTHS -- The infield of Mark Grace, Ryne Sandberg, Shawon
  77. Dunston and Steve Buechele. The acquisition of pitcher Jose
  78. Guzman and the emergence of Mike Morgan, a 16-game winner in
  79. 1992, will soften the blow from the loss of Cy Young winner Greg
  80. Maddux.

  82. WEAKNESSES -- The infield is no longer imposing if Sandberg
  83. (broken hand) and Dunston (back) are not healthy. Both begin the
  84. season the disabled list; despite playing in cozy Wrigley Field,
  85. the Cubs lack power; no front-line center fielder.

  87. NEW FACES -- Acquired pitcher Greg Hibbard (Florida), signed
  88. Jose Guzman (Texas), catcher Steve Lake (Philadelphia), pitcher
  89. Dan Plesac (Milwaukee), reliever Randy Myers (San Diego),
  90. outfielders Candy Maldonado (Toronto) and Willie Wilson
  91. (Oakland).

  95. NEW YORK METS -- Manager: Jeff Torborg (479-526), entering
  96. second season with the Mets.  1992 Finish: 72-90 (5th). 
  97.  
  98. STRENGTHS -- The pitching staff is not as strong as in the mid
  99. 1980s, but other teams would not mind having Bret Saberhagen,
  100. Dwight Gooden and Sid Fernandez as their first three starters;
  101. Newly acquired shortstop Tony Fernandez is among the best;
  102. Outfielder Bobby Bonilla is a better player than he showed in
  103. 1992.

  105. WEAKNESSES -- The Mets are thin at middle relief;  closer John
  106. Franco is coming off elbow surgery;  While Fernandez solves one
  107. defensive problem, Howard Johnson is back at third base and
  108. unproven Jeff Kent is at second. 
  109.  
  110. NEW FACES -- Acquired Tony Fernandez (San Diego) and relief
  111. pitcher Mike Maddux (San Diego); signed pitcher Frank Tanana
  112. (Detroit) and outfielder Joe Orsulak (Baltimore).

  116. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES -- Manager: Jim Fregosi (574-642),
  117. entering second full season with the Phillies.  1992 Finish:
  118. 70-92 (6th). 
  119.  
  120. STRENGTHS -- The Phillies have no trouble scoring runs with
  121. Lenny Dykstra, John Kruk and Darren Daulton in the lineup. Kruk
  122. hit .323 last season and Daulton drove in 109 runs; Third
  123. baseman Dave Hollins drove in 93 runs in his first full season.

  125. WEAKNESSES -- Dykstra's potential for injury; the pitching
  126. staff, keyed by Terry Mulholland, is respectable but injury
  127. prone and the bullpen is mediocre; Wes Chamblerlain was
  128. inconsistent at best in right field last season. 
  129.  
  130. NEW FACES -- Acquired pitchers Danny Jackson (Philadelphia) and
  131. David West (Minnesota); signed outfielder Pete Incaviglia
  132. (Houston), outfielder Milt Thompson (Houston), pitcher Larry
  133. Andersen (San Diego) and outfielder Jim Eisenreich (Kansas
  134. City).

  138. FLORIDA MARLINS -- Manager: Rene Lachemann (207-274), entering
  139. first season with the expansion Marlins.

  141. STRENGTHS -- The Marlins will have a four-time All-Star catcher
  142. in Benito Santiago; shortstop Walt Weiss is used to playing on
  143. winning teams after his years in Oakland; Orestes Destrade led
  144. the Japanese Pacific League in homers each of the last three
  145. seasons.

  147. WEAKNESSES -- The ace of the pitching staff is Charlie Hough,
  148. whose record is 10 games below .500 the last five seasons; Club
  149. went for younger players in the expansion draft and they will
  150. take their lumps in 1993.

  152. NEW FACES -- Everyone.

  155. WESTERN DIVISION

  159. ATLANTA BRAVES -- Manager: Bobby Cox (853-804), entering eighth
  160. season with the Braves.  1992 Finish: 98-64 (1st). 
  161.  
  162. STRENGTHS -- The addition of Greg Maddux gives the Braves a
  163. starting rotation that could be among the best in major league
  164. history. Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and Steve Avery are the
  165. others; The outfield has four quality players -- Deion Sanders,
  166. Otis Nixon, Ron Gant and David Justice -- to fit into three
  167. positions.

  169. WEAKNESSES -- Team chemistry could be more of a problem.
  170. Outfielder David Justice reportedly is not a favorite of his
  171. teammates. Those problems, however, tend to hit the surface only
  172. when a team is losing; the club could be suspect defensively at
  173. catcher if Greg Olson does not recover fully from a broken
  174. ankle.

  176. NEW FACES -- Signed Maddux (Cubs), infielder Bill Pecota (Mets),
  177. pitcher Jay Howell (Dodgers), infielder Wally Backman (Phillies)
  178. and pitcher Steve Bedrosian.

  182. CINCINNATI REDS -- Manager: Tony Perez, entering first season
  183. with the Reds. 1992 Finish: 90-72 (2nd). 
  184.  
  185. STRENGTHS -- While not as good as Atlanta, the Reds boast three
  186. quality starters in Jose Rijo, Tim Belcher and newly acquired
  187. John Smiley;  Barry Larkin is a premier shortstop and the Reds
  188. addressed their shortage of power by acquiring Kevin Mitchell
  189. from Seattle; The Reds have impressive overall speed with
  190. Larkin, Roberto Kelly, Bip Roberts and Reggie Sanders.

  192. WEAKNESSES -- Defense could be a problem in the outfield with
  193. Mitchell in left and Sanders in right. With Norm Charlton gone,
  194. the bullpen is average when you get past Rob Dibble. 
  195.  
  196. NEW FACES -- acquired outfielder Roberto Kelly and pitcher Greg
  197. Cadaret (New York Yankees) and outfielder Kevin Mitchell
  198. (Seattle), signed outfielders Cecil Espy and Gary Varsho
  199. (Pittsburgh), Smiley (Minnesota) and relievers Bill Landrum
  200. (Montreal) and Jeff Reardon (Atlanta).

  204. SAN DIEGO PADRES -- Manager: Jim Riggleman (4-8), entering first
  205. full season with the Padres.  1992 Finish: 82-80 (3rd). 
  206.  
  207. STRENGTHS -- Third baseman Gary Sheffield is one of baseball's
  208. brightest stars after competing for the triple crown last
  209. season; First baseman Fred McGriff hit 35 homers and drove in
  210. 104 runs; Tony Gwynn, now batting leadoff, will again be among
  211. the league's leading hitters.

  213. WEAKNESSES -- The economic recession.  Padres owner Tom Werner
  214. no longer has money to spare and has instituted an austerity
  215. program that would make Ebenezer Scrooge proud. As a result,
  216. morale is at an all-time low and most players want out of town. 
  217.  
  218. NEW FACES -- Acquired pitcher Wally Whitehurst (New York Mets),
  219. outfielder Phil Plantier (Boston); signed pitcher Scotreg
  220. Swindell and holdover Pete Harnisch; The Astros have emerging
  221. stars in Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio and Steve Finley and each
  222. has significant big league experience thanks to the youth
  223. program instituted a few years ago; new management willing to
  224. spend money.

  226. WEAKNESSES -- Andujar Cedeno hit just .173 as the starting
  227. shortstop last season; Eddie Taubensee (.222) did not prove he
  228. is the answer at catcher. 
  229.  
  230. NEW FACES -- signed Drabek (Pittsburgh) and Swindell
  231. (Cincinnati), outfielder Kevin Bass (New York Mets), shortstop
  232. Jose Uribe (San Francisco), outfielder Chris James (San
  233. Francisco); Acquired pitcher Tom Edens (Florida).

  237. SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS -- Manager: Dusty Baker, entering first
  238. season with the Giants.  1992 Finish: 72-90 (5th). 
  239.  
  240. STRENGTHS -- An explosive middle of the lineup with Barry Bonds,
  241. Will Clark and Matt Williams (if he can bounce back from a poor
  242. 1992); the distraction of a possible franchise move is over, at
  243. least for the time being. 
  244.  
  245. WEAKNESSES -- The Giants used 16 different starting pitchers in
  246. 1992 and none has emerged as an ace for this season. The Giants
  247. ranked ninth in league earned run average last season and
  248. allowed a league high 128 homers; The bench is weak. 
  249.  
  250. NEW FACES -- Signed Bonds (Pittsburgh), outfielder Dave Martinez
  251. (Cincinnati), first baseman Todd Benzinger (Kansas City),
  252. catcher Andy Allanson (Cleveland) and outfielder Mark Carreon
  253. (Detroit).

  257. LOS ANGELES DODGERS -- Manager: Tommy Lasorda (1,339-1,199),
  258. entering 18th season with the Dodgers.  1992 Finish: 63-99
  259. (6th). 
  260.  
  261. STRENGTHS -- Rookie of the Year first baseman Eric Karros was
  262. the team's most consistent performer last season; Darryl
  263. Strawberry and Eric Davis begin the season without any major
  264. ailments and will join Brett Butler in the outfield. 
  265.  
  266. WEAKNESSES -- The Dodgers committed a major-league high 174
  267. errors, 20 more than the next-worst club. The worst offender,
  268. Jose Offerman, is back for another season at shortstop; The
  269. pitching staff begins the year with several question marks. Orel
  270. Hershiser must prove he is healthy and Ramon Martinez has saw
  271. his win total decline from 20 in 1992 to eight last season; The
  272. new third baseman, Tim Wallach, had career lows in homers (9),
  273. R-B-I (59) and batting average (.223) last season.

  275. NEW FACES -- Acquired second baseman Jody Reed (Colorado);
  276. signed outfielder Cory Snyder (San Francisco), pitcher Todd
  277. Worrell (St. Louis), third basman Wallach (Montreal), catcher
  278. Lance Parrish (Seattle), pitchers Wally Ritchran players.
  279. Andres Galarraga is the first baseman and Charlie Hayes will be
  280. at third; David Nied is a quality pitching prospect who the
  281. Atlanra Braves were forced to leave unprotected; Steve Reed set
  282. a minor league record with 43 saves.

  284. WEAKNESSES -- The pitching staff after Nied includes a host of
  285. journeymen such as Bryn Smith and Bruce Ruffin; second baseman
  286. Eric Young is one of several Rockies that are suspect
  287. defensively; outfielder Alex Cole is with his fifth organization
  288. in four years.
